Class 1 - Miss Gethings

Class 1 - Miss Gethings

Welcome to Class 1! We are a hard-working and happy class who strive to follow our school motto - Learn to Love and Love to learn, each and every day. We love to learn through play and adventure; we learn to love by embracing our differences and celebrating the diversity in both our class and school community. We treat each other as family and show respect for those around us. A creative and inclusive approach to the curriculum in Year 1 provides children with unique and exciting opportunities to become curious, ambitious and independent learners. We recognise children as unique and offer opportunities for each child to flourish and achieve highly while building positive character traits through challenges. This will ensure that throughout Class 1 and beyond, each child has high aspirations to be the best that they can be.

We offer a holistic approach to Literacy through reading, writing, phonics and speaking and listening. We will begin by learning a set of instructions on 'How to make a jam sandwich'. We will create a story map and imitate the text, accurately retelling it using chronological order, time connectives and bossy verbs.

Phonics is essential particularly throughout Class 1. During the first term we secure all of the Phase 3 and Phase 4 phonemes (sounds). In our Lent term the children will learn the Phase 5 phonemes and alternative graphemes for previously learnt sounds. For example, they already know ai as in rain, but now they will be introduced to ay as in day and a-e as in make. Alternative pronunciations for graphemes will also be introduced, e.g. ea in tea, head and break. In June, all children will complete the National Phonics Screening.

There is a strong emphasis on promoting speaking and listening to strengthen and develop children's vocabulary. In our 'Vocab lab' sessions children will be learning new words to help them express themselves and enhance their writing.  We will also be taking part in many fun reading sessions to develop our love of reading.  We will enjoy using the reading area in the classroom as well as the new library.

In Numeracy, our lessons will be supported by using a range of practical resources to develop mathematical knowledge and understanding. We will begin by working on number skills including place value and addition and subtraction. We will also learn about shape, money, fractions and time. Throughout all our topics we will look at fluency, reasoning and problem solving.

In RE, we will explore 'Families' and discuss the importance of family life, including being part of God's family.

We will begin Science this term with a biology focus, learning about Humans, labelling body parts and discovering our senses.

In History, we will learn about Florence Nightingale. The children will learn about the role of a nurse, understand why Florence Nightingale was imporant and what she was like as a person and compare how hospitals have changed.

Key information:

  • PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please can you ensure your child has their full PE kit on these days, including trainers.
  • It would really help if you could put your child's name on jumpers/cardigans, coats, bags and PE kits.
  • Spellings are given out and tested every Friday.
  • Homework will be given out on a Friday and to be returned on a Tuesday.
  • Please ensure your child brings their reading folder to school every day and reads every evening. Reading books will be changed every Monday.
  • To ensure every child is working at the expected standard, we have a non-negotiables list of skills which the children will be working towards. It would be helpful if you supported your child with these skills at home.
  • Mrs Fedyszyn will be in Class 1 on Tuesday mornings to work with the children to develop their art skills. They will be busy working on portraits, through recognising and thinking about the proportions of features of their face.
  •  Miss Scotton and Mr Williams will be our teaching assistants this year.
